Encaustic tiles are handmade from cementitious material, and the pattern or figure on the surface is achieved by using different colours of clay. They develop their own patina over time, to create a beautiful, lived-in look.
Encaustic tiles were first made in Europe during the late 19th Century, and were used to decorate the floors of palaces in St. Petersburg, Gaudi's distinctive houses in Barcelona, and grand hallways from Paris to Saigon. Today they are used in countless chic bars, restaurants and designer homes in London, Paris and New York.
